People whose cars are impounded will soon be able to keep the vehicle at their homes through a system in which trackers would be installed to notify police if the vehicle is driven.
The smart impound service will begin within the next three months, Col Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic, said.
Drivers will now be able to choose whether to pay the fee, keep the car at the police lot or use the new smart service.
