Bridge to Bluewaters Island project is approved

DUBAI // A bridge link to the recently announced Dh1.6 billion Bluewaters Island project opposite the Jumeirah Beach Residence coastline has been approved.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, has endorsed the Roads and Transport Authority’s plans for the bridge as well as a new bridge for International City. The two projects will cost about Dh700 million.

Entrance projects for Bluewaters Island comprises the construction of a bridge stretching from the island to the Jumeirah Lakes Towers Junction on Sheikh Zayed Road.

“The bridge will have two lanes in each direction in a 1.4km stretch and there will be lanes dedicated for the personal rapid transit system along with additional slipways at the junctions of Jumeirah Lakes, and a service road on the Sheikh Zayed Road leading to the island extending 1.5km,” said Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the authority.

The authority will award the project’s construction contract in the second quarter of this year, and it will cost about Dh500 million.

The bridge will provide free movement for traffic inbound from Abu Dhabi on the Sheikh Zayed Road outbound to Bluewaters Island, traffic coming from Al Khail Road via Qarn Al Sabkha Road heading towards the island, and the traffic from the island heading to Dubai and Abu Dhabi through the Sheikh Zayed Road.

The island will host retail, residential, tourist and recreational facilities in addition to a bazaar and the world’s largest Ferris wheel. The island is expected to attract about three million visitors a year.

A monorail will take visitors from the Metro station to the festivities area, a footbridge will link the luxury island with the waterfront of Jumeirah Beach Residence, and a gondola cable car will shuttle visitors to and from the entertainment zone.

The International City entrances project extends from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Nouakchott Road, north to south, and from Al Awir Road to Al Manama Road, east to west. Plans include building a flyover at the intersection of Al Awir Road and Nouakchott Road to provide a free left turn from Nouakchott Road to Al Awir Road in the direction of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and a U-turn for vehicles moving out of International City towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This reduces more than 7 km of commute.

The project includes adding an extra lane to Al Awir Road to accommodate the entry point to International City without affecting traffic movement.

“This project is undertaken in collaboration with Nakheel, the master developer of the International City project, and in the light of the traffic impacts study for the International City and the Dragon Mart as well as the nearing completion of the Dragon Mart extension, which is anticipated to increase traffic congestions in the area,” said Mr Al Tayer.

Currently the main entry point on Al Awir Road gets congested during morning and evening peak times. Nouakchott Road will be converted to a dual carriageway, besides providing two additional entry and exit points for International City.

What is graphene?

Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged like honeycomb.

It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were "playing about" with sticky tape and graphite - the material used as "lead" in pencils.

Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But as they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.

By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment had led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.

At the time, many believed it was impossible for such thin crystalline materials to be stable. But examined under a microscope, the material remained stable, and when tested was found to have incredible properties.

It is many times times stronger than steel, yet incredibly lightweight and flexible. It is electrically and thermally conductive but also transparent. The world's first 2D material, it is one million times thinner than the diameter of a single human hair.

But the 'sticky tape' method would not work on an industrial scale. Since then, scientists have been working on manufacturing graphene, to make use of its incredible properties.

In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. Their discovery meant physicists could study a new class of two-dimensional materials with unique properties.

How the UAE gratuity payment is calculated now

Employees leaving an organisation are entitled to an end-of-service gratuity after completing at least one year of service.

The tenure is calculated on the number of days worked and does not include lengthy leave periods, such as a sabbatical. If you have worked for a company between one and five years, you are paid 21 days of pay based on your final basic salary. After five years, however, you are entitled to 30 days of pay. The total lump sum you receive is based on the duration of your employment.

1. For those who have worked between one and five years, on a basic salary of Dh10,000 (calculation based on 30 days):

a. Dh10,000 ÷ 30 = Dh333.33. Your daily wage is Dh333.33

b. Dh333.33 x 21 = Dh7,000. So 21 days salary equates to Dh7,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service. Multiply this figure for every year of service up to five years.

2. For those who have worked more than five years

c. 333.33 x 30 = Dh10,000. So 30 days’ salary is Dh10,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service.

Note: The maximum figure cannot exceed two years total salary figure.

How to become a Boglehead

Bogleheads follow simple investing philosophies to build their wealth and live better lives. Just follow these steps.

•   Spend less than you earn and save the rest. You can do this by earning more, or being frugal. Better still, do both.

•   Invest early, invest often. It takes time to grow your wealth on the stock market. The sooner you begin, the better.

•   Choose the right level of risk. Don't gamble by investing in get-rich-quick schemes or high-risk plays. Don't play it too safe, either, by leaving long-term savings in cash.

•   Diversify. Do not keep all your eggs in one basket. Spread your money between different companies, sectors, markets and asset classes such as bonds and property.

•   Keep charges low. The biggest drag on investment performance is all the charges you pay to advisers and active fund managers.

•   Keep it simple. Complexity is your enemy. You can build a balanced, diversified portfolio with just a handful of ETFs.

•   Forget timing the market. Nobody knows where share prices will go next, so don't try to second-guess them.

•   Stick with it. Do not sell up in a market crash. Use the opportunity to invest more at the lower price.

Other ways to buy used products in the UAE

UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.

Bidders and potential buyers register on the online salvage car auction portal to view vehicles, review condition reports, or arrange physical surveys, and then start bidding for motors they plan to restore or harvest for parts.

Physical salvage car auctions are a common method for insurers around the world to move on heavily damaged vehicles, but AWNIC is one of the few UAE insurers to offer such services online.

For cars and less sizeable items such as bicycles and furniture, Dubizzle is arguably the best-known marketplace for pre-loved.

Founded in 2005, in recent years it has been joined by a plethora of Facebook community pages for shifting used goods, including Abu Dhabi Marketplace, Flea Market UAE and Arabian Ranches Souq Market while sites such as The Luxury Closet and Riot deal largely in second-hand fashion.

At the high-end of the pre-used spectrum, resellers such as Timepiece360.ae, WatchBox Middle East and Watches Market Dubai deal in authenticated second-hand luxury timepieces from brands such as Rolex, Hublot and Tag Heuer, with a warranty.
