DUBAI // Eighty-six children were trapped in cars and rescued by police in Dubai in the first nine months of this year.

The Search and Rescue Department at Dubai Police said the figure was only marginally down from 90 during the same time period in 2015.

Of the 86 children, all of whom were under the age of 12, 82 were under five, said Lt Col Ahmed Burqibah, deputy director of the department.

The country has seen several tragic cases of children dying after being left in hot cars by unsuspecting parents.

Meanwhile, Dubai Police recorded 92 cases of children either stuck in lifts or rooms in the first nine months of the year, down from 97 the previous year.

Lt Col Burqibah also said that the department recorded 235 sea and land rescue missions, in which 51 people were killed.

“There were 134 land missions, 56 sea rescues and 45 cases of drowning,” he said, adding that Dubai Police recorded 227 rescue missions in the first nine months of last year. Thirty-eight people were killed in that time last year.
