Accidents around UAE as fog reduces visibility to 10 metres

ABU DHABI // Police around the UAE reported several accidents in heavy traffic as a result of fog causing visibility at times reduced to as little as 10 metres.

This morning, the traffic authority reported two accidents on Sheikh Zayed Road in Abu Dhabi. They warned commuters not to speed up even when they think that the road is opening up.

In heavy fog, drivers can be under the illusion that they can speed up, giving them less time to react in congested situations, the traffic authority said.

On Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, an accident on the Abu Dhabi-bound side in Al Warqa 1 caused heavy traffic back to Muwailih commercial.

Another accident was reported on Al Aweer Road next to the fruit and vegetable market, Dubai bound.

Drivers on the Sheikh Zayed Road were experiencing significantly less traffic than is expected on a weekday.

Sharjah commuters bound for Dubai, however, hit the usual congestion as they made their way into Deira and around Dubai International Airport.

In Abu Dhabi, traffic was smooth along the motorways, but inner city roads were experiencing heavy flows.

Authorities are urging commuters to slow down and avoid any sort of aggressive driving during the foggy weather.
