ABU DHABI // As more people are living in the capital than ever before, the emirate’s roads and transport systems have to keep pace.
According to the Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi the combined lengths of inter-city highways throughout the emirate increased by 7.2 per cent from 2,500km in 2012, to 2,700 in 2013.
The combined lengths of local roads extended over the same period increased by 10.2 per cent from 16,800km in 2012 to 18,500km in 2013.
The increasing number of people has also meant a significant increase in air traffic.
When compared with 2013, the number of flights through the Abu Dhabi’s airports increased by 25.5 per cent, reaching 213,200 flights in 2014.
More than 35 international airlines now operate regular flights to more than 150 destination from Abu Dhabi International Airport.
The capital’s two seaports, Zayed Port and Khalifa Port, continue to expand.
Khalifa Port now serves more than 17 international sea-cargo routes and has contact with 50 regional and international ports.
