DUBAI // A 59-year-old Italian tourist who appealed a five-year prison sentence for smuggling more than two kilograms of cocaine through Dubai airport in his underwear, has had his jail term doubled.
The Dubai Appeals Court overturned the sentence of a lower court and ordered that M R be locked up for 10 years for drug smuggling.
M R admitted trying to smuggle the cocaine through Dubai International Airport but when he appeared at Dubai Criminal Court last November he said it was for his personal use.
He was arrested on May 10 last year.
“He was walking in a suspicious manner and kept turning around as if he was scared of being noticed by anyone,” said policeman E E.
The officer said after searching M R he found he was wearing three pairs of underwear, inside which he had hidden seven plastic bags. “When we opened the bags, it contained 2.05kg of cocaine,” said E E.
A Dh50,000 fine and deportation order handed down to M R by the criminal court were also upheld.
