AJMAN // An English teacher has been fired for using his belt to whip more than a dozen school pupils.
According to an Emirates Human Rights Association report, the man, who worked at a high school in Ajman, beat 16 10th graders in October.
After EHRA presented the findings to the Ministry of Education, the teacher was fired.
Mohammed Al Kaabi, EHRA's chairman, said the association condemned the act, which "runs counter to modern teaching methods and educational laws applicable in the UAE", Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National, reported.
Mr Al Kaabi said handing out appropriate punishments for these kinds of assaults would deter other people from doing the same.
