Friday’s sermon advises Muslims to take good care of the elderly, specifically parents.
Allah has noted the ageing of parents because it is the situation where parents can see the righteousness of their children.
Their circumstances have changed and they become weak and helpless, and the children must take their well-being into account, the sermon reads.
“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small’, [17:23].
“Appreciating them, looking after their needs and easing their affairs are habits of the Prophet Mohammed and other loyal prophets and they have given a good example in honouring the elderly.
“It is no wonder the prophets took it as a habit, as it is mercy bestowed by Allah, and shows the true kindness and compassion for all people,” it reads.
“So, Muslims, if you see the elderly who are weary of disease and sickness, have mercy on their weakness. Raise their glory and appreciate them. Take good care of them, and surely Allah will attribute you.”
Taking care of the elderly is easy, the sermon reads. Checking on them frequently, speaking to them, and providing them with a needed service are what the elderly need.
