ABU DHABI // A student wanted Dh500,000 compensation from a young man for a broken tooth after a fight in a lecture hall, an appeal court heard.
Palestinian A A, 19, was sentenced at the Criminal Court to two months in jail followed by deportation over the fight and ordered to pay Dh10,000.
But his lawyer on Thursday told the Appeals Court that his client had tried to offer the student compensation but he “asked for Dh500,000”.
“It is just a tooth. The blood money for it does not exceed Dh2,000 to Dh5,000,” he said.
The lawyer said the squabble broke out during a lecture in the hall and the victim told A A to take it outside. The professor giving the lecture ordered the pair to leave and the fight continued outside.
He said he wanted the deportation order overturned because all of his client’s family live in the UAE and because “he cannot be deported to Palestine”.
“It was a simple, minor fight between two young men,” the lawyer said. “He did not use any knife or arms. It was not a gang fight, just boys’ stuff.
“We asked for the university professor to attend and testify but the university forbade her from coming and threatened to fire her.”
The court will announce a verdict on Wednesday.
