A woman who was sexually assaulted by a man while she was out walking with her grandmother chased the offender down and caught him, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Tuesday.
On October 17, the 19-year-old Emirati student was out for a walk with her 50-year-old grandmother near Al Kuwaiti Mosque in Naif when a man spanked her behind and ran away.
"I screamed and immediately chased him, people who heard my cry for help joined in the chase and we caught him," said the student who then called police.
Her grandmother told police she did not see what happened only heard her granddaughter scream before running after a man. "She later told me what he did," the Emirati said.
An Emirati policeman said a crowd surrounded the offender while the woman screamed him.
"I took him into custody and he didn't not respond when I asked him if he had touched the student or not, but he was drunk,' said the officer.
The Pakistani defendant, 43, did not attend court on Tuesday to face a sexual assault charge.
The next hearing will be held on December 14 to summon the accused.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
