ABU DHABI // The National’s sports section has been named one of the 10 best daily sections in its circulation category for 2013 by the Associated Press Sports Editors organisation.

It marks the third successive year The National has been honoured in the daily section competition by the organisation, generally considered the most significant sport-specific competition in print journalism.

The North America-based organisation, made up of newspaper sports editors, identifies the top 10 sections in five circulation categories but does not rank them individually.

The National competes in the 30,000 to 75,000 daily circulation category.

Each competitor sends four daily sections, two dates randomly selected by organisers and two chosen by the competing newspaper, which are then judged by panels of sports editors.

Paul Oberjuerge, sports editor of The National, said: “Being chosen in the top 10 in such a prestigious competition is a credit to the skill and dedication of the writers, editors, photographers and graphic artists who are dedicated to producing the best possible product for our loyal readers.”

Among the newspapers winning recognition as a top-10 daily section were the New York Times, the New York Daily News, the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.

The National was also cited for honourable mention in the “special section” category, for the F1 Magazine.
