Sheikha Salama honoured

DUBAI // Sheikha Salama bint Hamdan, the wife of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has won the Woman Personality of the Year Award, the state news agency WAM reported yesterday.

Organised by the Middle East Excellence Awards Institute, the 10th Middle East Women Leaders Awards recognises the "phenomenal treasures of versatile abilities and changing roles of women achievers".

The award was in recognition of Sheikha Salama's achievements and innovative leadership, and her contribution to community and humanitarian work. The event aimed to highlight the role women play in today's organisations, and women's role in inspiring social, intellectual and cultural achievements in the next generation.

Ali al Kamali, the chief executive of the Middle East Excellence Awards, said the government's support for women had helped the UAE keep pace with scientific, social and economic developments in other parts of the world.

It also reflected "a huge development towards involving women in decision making", the state news agency WAM reported.

The award was presented to Sheikh Diab bin Mohammed, on behalf of Sheikha Salama, by Dr Hanif Hassan Ali, the Minister of Health, at a ceremony organised to coincide with International Women's Day last week.
