A senior minister has paid tribute to the contribution of resident workers in the UAE at an event to mark International Labour Day.

Speaking at a ceremony held at Workers’ City in Saadiyat Accommodation Village, Abu Dhabi, on Friday, Minister of Tolerance Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak said the country was “built upon the skills and hard work that you, your brothers and friends have given to the UAE”.

He also said that he was honoured to join them at the annual celebration.

As well as speeches, guests were entertained with dance performances from a variety of Asian countries, a marching band and a choir.

“On this Labour Day, we thank you for your excellent work and unfailing efforts to make the UAE a country that is peaceful and welcoming to everyone," said Sheikh Nahyan.

"Thank you all for being part of the community and for the critical part that you have played in building our country. Thank you for your help in making our Emirates of Zayed true to his vision as a country of peace, progress and prosperity. And thank you for your efforts to support the co-operation and friendship between your countries and the UAE.”

He announced that the Tolerance Cricket Cup, held for the first time last year and contested by workers representing India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, will be held again this year. A new Kabaddi Cup will also take place.

Sheikh Nahyan promised a new health and fitness campaign, which he said would benefit all workers.

A mobile hospitals initiative that will offer free medical services to workers at workers' villages nationwide was also announced recently.
