DUBAI // A Sharjah police officer who released a prisoner in exchange for a Dh3,000 bribe has been sacked and sentenced to three years in jail.
On August 30 last year the Emirati officer was ordered to drive an Indian, 52, to Bur Dubai police station. While they were driving the prisoner begged the officer to set him free.
The officer agreed but asked for Dh3,000. A few days later, the prisoner was persuaded by his son to hand himself in and the officer was arrested.
Investigators said the officer had spent Dh2,000 and the remaining Dh1,000 was confiscated.
He was also ordered to pay a Dh3,000 fine by Dubai Criminal Court after being found guilty of taking a bribe and releasing a detainee.
