Shah Rukh Khan plays auctioneer in Dubai

The famous Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan will be at a charity auction in Dubai on Monday to benefit a school for children with special needs.

DUBAI // Shah Rukh Khan, one of India's most famous movie stars, will be the auctioneer at a charity dinner for the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre on Monday.

Khan will be in Dubai for the world premiere of his movie Ra.One. The charity dinner at the Grand Hyatt is open to the public and will follow the invitation-only premiere at the Grand Cineplex.

Children from the special-needs centre have prepared gifts to present to the star at the dinner, organisers said.

Details of the memorabilia on auction have not yet been announced.

"Shah Rukh will be the auctioneer," said Abdul Rahman, the media adviser for the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre. "Young girls and boys from the centre have prepared paintings and a photograph to be presented to him in a beautiful wooden box. They wanted to make it themselves for Shah Rukh."

Tickets for the charity dinner cost Dh1,000 to Dh2,000 and are on sale at Iconic and Splash.

"The VIP tickets are for tables near Shah Rukh so people will get a better view of him," said Rashid Saeed, the managing director of Essar Events in Dubai, which is organising Khan's visit. "There is a huge interest in the UAE to meet Shah Rukh, both among the Asian and the local population."

Billed as one of Bollywood's most expensive films, with a budget of 1.5 billion rupees (Dh110.5 million), Ra.One is about a superhero who shoots out bolts of electricity.

Khan plays G.One, or "Good One", who can fly faster than the speed of a train and shares a deep bond with a boy who is an ace video-game player. The movie is about G.One's battle with the villain Ra.One, played by Arjun Rampal.
