Sentence reduced for rapist who conned his way into woman's home

A jobless man posing as a police officer who raped a woman after tricking his way into her home has had his six-year jail term reduced by the Court of Appeal.

The rapist, who was accompanied by another man, was pretending to be a CID officer to gain access into the woman’s home, before attacking and robbing her on January 26 this year.

In court records. the woman said she opened the door for the two men, believing she was cooperating and was ready to answer their questions.

"I panicked when they locked the door, after which they started threatening me with knives and demanded I hand them all the cash in my possession," said the woman, whose age and nationality have not been revealed.

The woman was raped, and then robbed of Dh720 in cash along with a Samsung mobile phone.

The men panicked and fled when they heard loud screams from outside the fourth-floor-apartment in the Naif area, shortly after the attack.

"One of the men ran towards the balcony and tried to climb down the pipes, but he fell to his death," said the victim, who seized the moment to make her own escape, unlocking the door to her apartment and running out.

A passerby who saw the dead man called police reporting a falling incident. When they arrived, police officers discovered the 24-year-old Pakistani standing next to his friend's dead body.

He was arrested and taken into custody. When later questioned by police, the defendant admitted being in the apartment, raping and robbing the woman.

Three days later, police asked the victim to attend the police station to give her testimony of events. She told them she was scared to report the attack.

At the Dubai Criminal Court, the 24-year-old defendant said he was drunk at the time of the attack.

He was convicted of rape, impersonation and theft and sentenced to six years in prison. On appeal, the court reduced his sentence to five years, followed by deportation.
