Security, safety and fun top priorities for organisers of Dubai Rugby Sevens

DUBAI // As tens of thousands of fans prepare for the Dubai Rugby Sevens, organisers said security would be tightened to ensure the event runs smoothly.

Last year the three-day Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament, which features both professional and amateur teams from around the world, attracted close to 100,000 spectators. This year the organisers expect even more people to attend the Sevens Stadium on the Dubai-Al Ain Road from Thursday to Saturday.

“We’re all very aware of the increased security situation worldwide and have taken appropriate measures,” said Donal Kilalea, CEO of Promoseven Sports, which runs the event.

“We pride ourselves on safety and work closely with the authorities and we have done so for the six months prior to the event.”

Security has been enhanced in terms of the number of personnel on the ground, said Mr Kilalea. “We’ve got a very experienced team of security staff. Dubai Police are working very closely with us. They have always been very supportive of the tournament and continue to be so.”

Friday, the biggest day of the weekend, is expected to draw crowds of about 45,000.

Uefa Nations League: How it Works

The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.

The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.

Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Portugal, who finished above Italy and Poland, successfully bid to host the finals.
