DUBAI // A security guard who stole Dh45,000 worth of building equipment from his employer’s warehouse has been jailed for three months by Dubai Criminal Court.

The 33-year-old Bangladeshi took scaffolding, aluminium doors and a small food mixer from a warehouse in Al Rashidiya, prosecutors said.

The defendant had earlier admitted to the crime in court.

The court heard that on January 29 he called his employer and told him the warehouse had been raided while he had gone to pray.

The defendant’s 65-year-old employer visited the warehouse and realised that all the items could not have been stolen in such a short period.

“I asked him, but he denied his involvement,” said the Emirati.

After questioning workers at a nearby warehouse, he was told that they saw the defendant taking machinery and other items on different occasions.

“When police came, he confessed to them that he had been stealing goods and selling them to a man in Sharjah,” said the warehouse owner.

Police also arrested the buyer when he went to meet the defendant in a sting operation.

The 26-year-old, also from Bangladesh, was convicted of possessing stolen goods, a charge he denied in court in an earlier hearing.

He was convicted and sentenced to three months in jail.

Both will be deported after serving their terms.
