A man who was feared drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming at Jumeirah Beach has been rescued and revived by Dubai Police.

The man, a school principal in his fifties, was in the company of family and friends at the beach but swam too far from shore and succumbed to fatigue.

He called for help but could not be reached by his friends, said Major Ali Al Naqbi, head of the maritime rescue department at the Department of Transport and Rescue of Dubai Police.

When police officers plucked the man from the sea, he had stopped breathing and had no pulse.

The rescue team used a defibrillator to kickstart his heart.

He was taken to Rashid Hospital for further treatment and later released.
