ABU DHABI // A key intersection onto Salam Street will be opened today, Abu Dhabi Municipality announced. Delma Street will be directly connected with Salam Street, cutting commute times for residents driving into the city centre. It will also "pave the way for the construction of surface, bypass and service roads within the area", according to the municipality.
Some additional detours have also been added at Salam Street's intersections with 25th and 29th streets, the announcement said, with the left lane and U-turn access closed. The three-year, Dh5 billion Salam Street project is expected to double the number of cars able to enter the city each hour. When completed, the renovated thoroughfare will include several tunnels and allow drivers to travel from the Sheikh Zayed Bridge to the port area without facing a stoplight.
The municipality said it "continues to encourage motorists to adhere to speed limits and obey all traffic laws". "Pedestrians are urged to use proper crossing areas and bridges provided by the municipality for their own safety," it added. The municipality said earlier this month that all work on the Salam Street project, which began in December 2009, is on schedule and will be completed by the end of the year, but many deadlines remain unclear.
