DUBAI // The driver of a bus involved in a multiple crash in which dozens of people were hurt has been released after giving a statement to police and is unlikely to face charges, it was disclosed yesterday.
Two buses, a minibus and a car were involved in Thursday's crash, in which 87 people were hospitalised. All but six, none of whom suffered life-threatening injuries, have been discharged.
The collision occurred on Sheikh Zayed Road near Ibn Battuta mall, Dubai. It involved a Road and Transport Authority bus carrying 50 passengers from Abu Dhabi, a bus carrying building workers, a minibus with six tourists and a car. The first two buses were destroyed.
The driver of the RTA Inter Emirates bus was taken into custody but freed. An RTA spokesman said: "It is unlikely he will be prosecuted as, according to UAE law, the last vehicle is usually the cause of the accident."

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
