Review work continues on Abu Dhabi census results

Further delay in release but statistics centre says it is on schedule.

ABU DHABI // Census results for the emirate have been delayed again as the Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (Scad) continues to review data.

The census took place in November, and provisional results were expected by the end of last year with data available by May.

But Scad said the project was still considered to be on schedule.

"The fieldwork for the Abu Dhabi Census 2011 was completed in November 2011," said Dr Yousif Al Hammadi, survey planning, design and processing manager at Scad.

"Since then, Scad has been busy combining the different data sources, coding responses, editing the data and preparing various outputs."

Dr Al Hammadi did not give a reason for the delay, saying the fieldwork had been done within the agreed time.

He said Scad was taking time to ensure the final results were of good quality and that preliminary population estimates would be released with the organisation's coming statistical yearbook.

Dr Al Hammadi did not give a date of publication. Last year's edition was released in July.

In 2010, the population of Abu Dhabi was estimated to be about 1.9 million, with almost 61 per cent living in the capital, about 29 per cent in Al Ain, and 9 per cent in Al Gharbia, the data published last year showed.

National Bureau of Statistics estimates, obtained from its website, show the population of the UAE was 8,264,070, of which 947,997 were Emirati.

There has been no indication a national census will be conducted.
