Remember those who have left us

With only a week to go until the end of Ramadan, the days and nights are flying by quickly. Muslims tend to be extra emotional as we bid adieu to the holy month. We don't really want it to go, but alas, this is what life is all about, one big rotating circle that keeps rolling and rolling. Every day, week, month and year we welcome new people into this circle and wonder whom we might never see again. The rotation begins when you are introduced to people who care for you and love you until you are ready to join the giant circle yourself. Many of us move so fast, we don't realise just how heavy the rotation is until we look back at the people who are no longer running around the circle with us.

We never know if we will see another Ramadan, and I think this is a good time to reflect on the people who are no longer with us. Remembering loved ones reminds us to follow our goals and be on our best behaviour, so when it comes time for us to leave the circle we leave a positive legacy. Last year I had iftar with my beloved father. He was ill and taking a dozen or so medications a day, yet he insisted on waiting for me before he would take them. The iftar was nice, but nothing special until this year. My father passed away in March, and that was the last iftar I spent with him. I miss you, Dad and may God rest your soul in peace.
