The public health department at Ras Al Khaimah municipality penalised and warned 218 shops in February during 243 inspections of more than 1,500 shops.
As a result, 44 kilograms of foodstuffs deemed unfit for human consumption were destroyed.
Moudhir Al Zaabi, director general of the municipality, said the inspections are regularly carried out to ensure all establishments abide by regulations.
Khalifa Al Maktoum, head of the public health department, said of the 218 shops in violation of safety regulations, 28 were issued warnings, 46 gave undertakings, and 95 were fined a total of Dh108,685.
Also, 13 cars displayed for sale were withdrawn and one shop was shut down.
During the same period, 1,510 health cards were issued by the public health department for the staff of commercial outlets to ensure they were free of contagious diseases.
