The Ministry of Interior organised a presentation for students to raise awareness about the issue of human rights.
The lecture, delivered by Lt Jumaa Al Hosani from the Human Rights Respect Bureau, looked at the concept of human rights and the role of the bureau in educating the public.
It highlighted the positive effects of social media in boosting cultural interaction and creativity, as well as negatives such as threats to privacy and spreading rumours.
Lt Al Hosani said the law lays down rights and obligations for the public and guarantees justice for all, adding that “those who do not respect the law cannot ask others to respect it”.
He explained that “ignorance of the law is no excuse” and an individual has to gain basic legal knowledge from reliable sources rather than rumours and people’s opinions.
Students have the right to a good education in a safe learning envirnment, to be treated with respect by teachers, staff and peers, and to be rewarded for good conduct. On the other hand, students are obligated to observe school rules and regulations and support a positive school environment.
