DUBAI // A competition to encourage shops in Naif to maintain high cleanliness and environment standards will be extended to other parts of Dubai, after the successful campaign by Dubai Municipality last year. "The campaign will be taken to other areas of the city such as Al Ghubaibah, Sabkha, Al Fahidi, Al Karama, Al Quoz, and other areas soon," said Hassan Makki, the director of the municipality's waste-management department.
The municipality yesterday named the winning shops in the Clean Store Contest as part of its "Say Yes to a Clean Naif" campaign, held from October to November last year. The Anjerdan shop was the winner, while Haji bin Mohammed Ali store and Golden Tiger store won first and second runner-up, respectively. Two hundred shops in the Naif area had entered the competition, which was sponsored by Western Union.
Mr Makki said the municipality had asked residents not to throw dirt, cigarette butts or other waste on the roads, and to stop spitting in public. The municipality had monitored the shops throughout the campaign to check whether they properly disposed of different kinds of waste, and maintained general cleanliness inside and outside. rruiz@thenational.ae
