DUBAI // A policewoman will spend three months in jail after being convicted of taking money from a wallet left behind by a passenger at Dubai International Airport.

The 28-year-old Emirati was seen picking up the wallet from lost property on August 5, Dubai Criminal Court was told.

“Her job is to search travellers, looking for any suspicious stuff,” said a 36-year-old Emirati policeman. “There is a box for any items passengers misplace.

“I saw as she opened the wallet and took cash.”

The defendant was arrested on August 8 and admitted taking US dollars and changing them into dirhams at an exchange house in the airport.

“She said the amount came to Dh2,000,” the policeman said.

She admitted a breach of trust and embezzlement charges to prosecutors, then denied them when she appeared in court in September. But she was convicted and fined Dh2,000.
