DUBAI // As people get ready to enjoy Eid Al Adha, Dubai Police is stepping up patrols to ensure everything runs smoothly during the holiday period.
Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri, of the Criminal Investigation Department, said more than 600 security patrols will be spread across the emirate.
“There are instructions from Dubai Police chief Maj Gen Khamis Al Muzeina to increase patrols to protect people and property in general,” he said, adding that directors and deputy directors of Dubai Police stations have been instructed to work during the holiday to receive any complaints.
He called on residents and tourists to abide by the laws and not leave their belonging unattended on beaches, also urging residents to register with Dubai Police’s security housing programme in case they intend to leave their homes and travel abroad.
Motorists should also never leave their doors open and keys inside to avoid being robbed, Maj Gen Al Mansouri said, as he urged parents to keep an eye on their children at all times.
Meanwhile, Col Jamal Al Bannai, acting director of the General Department of Traffic, said he will deploy 189 traffic police patrols across the emirate.
He warned motorists to be cautious and slow down while driving in residential areas and said pedestrians should also be careful and only cross roads from designated areas.
“We want [motorists and pedestrians] to be extra careful during this time because many people will be using the roads, going out during this holiday, in addition to taking out their children to play or make visits,” said Col Al Bannai. “Parents should watch out for their children and make sure they do not play on streets where vehicles pass to avoid accidents.
“There will also be an increase of patrols in residential areas to put a stop to pedestrians crossing from undesignated areas.”
The traffic chief said patrols will be deployed in crowded areas and shopping districts, as well as having an increased presence on motorways such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Dubai-Al Ain road, Ras Al Khor, Academic City and Al Khawaneej.
“We will also have patrols near mosques and ones deployed in the evening to watch out for reckless driving,” he said.
Col Al Bannai called on the public to cooperate with the police by calling the “We Are All Police” free hotline, 800 4353, to report any traffic violations.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
