An Emirati student has been arrested for selling fireworks on social media, police say.

Col Rashid Borshid, director of Abu Dhabi CID, said the suspect had 14 boxes containing 483 fireworks, most of which were unsafely stored at the student’s residence to be sold.

Col Borshid said the police organised crime section had received information about the fireworks being advertised on social media.

A team kept watch on a suspect, A K, 21, who was then arrested at Shahama with three boxes of fireworks that he was trying to sell for Dh1,000 a box, police said.

Eleven more boxes were seized at his residence.

“Some of the seized fireworks are considered hazardous and should only be used by specialised companies and trained technicians, and stored in safe places,” Col Borshid said.

Police said the suspect confessed to having the fireworks and that he was going to sell them after advertising them on social media.

He was referred to the Public Prosecution.

Col Borshid warned against the risks of fireworks, especially in the hands of children.

Members of the public should immediately report any promotion or use of fireworks by calling the Operations Room on 999, through the “Aman” number 8002626, which receives information confidentially, or through text messages on 2828.
