DUBAI // So how much does your daughter love One Direction? Is it Dh3,000 worth?
Because that’s what you can expect to pay for a Dh500 ticket as greedy touts cash in on the boy band’s sold-out concert in Dubai next year.
And even that price is expected to increase as April 4 draws closer and Harry, Liam, Zayn, Louis and Niall take to the stage at the 30,000-capacity Sevens stadium.
When tickets went on sale in May priced at Dh250 to Dh1,000, there was a limit of eight per person. But organisers admit there was nothing to stop people making more than one application.
And when the concert sold out in a record 22 days, that was a licence to print money for touts.
This week about 50 tickets were on sale on the Dubizzle website. Most were at three or four times face value, and one seller lists a Dh500 gold ticket for Dh3,000.
One seller called Peter was selling four Dh250 bronze tickets for Dh1,000 each. He will be out of the country in April.
“I bought them when they first came out and I am going to make some money on them,” he said.
Another advertiser called Craig sold four diamond tickets for Dh3,000 each, three times face value.
“That is the price I want to sell them at,” he said. “I had six and I have sold four. That is the price they were purchased for. It is pretty much the going rate.”
Hiral Desai bought eight tickets, and put four Dh500 gold tickets up for sale at Dh1,700 each. “Within two hours, I had three text messages. I had five or six people call me.
“One guy was willing to pay me Dh2,000. I know people who are actually willing to pay Dh4,000 for a ticket. It is crazy. I have people from Lebanon and the US sending messages wanting these tickets.”
Mr Desai will use two of his tickets to take his 11-year-old daughter to the show.
“I know come February or March, there will still be people who want tickets,” he said.
The One Direction show, part of the band’s On the Road Again world tour, is the fastest selling in UAE history. About 4,000 fans queued from 4am to buy tickets when they first went on sale.
The inflated prices also make it one of the most expensive concerts anywhere in the world. Only Sting’s 60th birthday concert in New York, where tickets topped US$1,000, or more than Dh3,600, appears to beat the record.
Rod Stewart fills stadiums for just under $800 a ticket, Elton John averages just under $500 a ticket and Donny and Marie Osmond’s reunion concert fetched $750 a ticket.

Why the Tourist Club?
Originally, The Club (which many people chose to call the “British Club”) was the only place where one could use the beach with changing rooms and a shower, and get refreshments.
In the early 1970s, the Government of Abu Dhabi wanted to give more people a place to get together on the beach, with some facilities for children. The place chosen was where the annual boat race was held, which Sheikh Zayed always attended and which brought crowds of locals and expatriates to the stretch of beach to the left of Le Méridien and the Marina.
It started with a round two-storey building, erected in about two weeks by Orient Contracting for Sheikh Zayed to use at one these races. Soon many facilities were planned and built, and members were invited to join.
Why it was called “Nadi Al Siyahi” is beyond me. But it is likely that one wanted to convey the idea that this was open to all comers. Because there was no danger of encountering alcohol on the premises, unlike at The Club, it was a place in particular for the many Arab expatriate civil servants to join. Initially the fees were very low and membership was offered free to many people, too.
Eventually there was a skating rink, bowling and many other amusements.

Garlicky shrimp in olive oil
Gambas Al Ajillo
Preparation time: 5 to 10 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Serves 4
Ingredients
180ml extra virgin olive oil; 4 to 5 large cloves of garlic, minced or pureed (or 3 to 4 garlic scapes, roughly chopped); 1 or 2 small hot red chillies, dried (or ¼ teaspoon dried red chilli flakes); 400g raw prawns, deveined, heads removed and tails left intact; a generous splash of sweet chilli vinegar; sea salt flakes for seasoning; a small handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
Method
▶ Heat the oil in a terracotta dish or frying pan. Once the oil is sizzling hot, add the garlic and chilli, stirring continuously for about 10 seconds until golden and aromatic.
▶ Add a splash of sweet chilli vinegar and as it vigorously simmers, releasing perfumed aromas, add the prawns and cook, stirring a few times.
▶ Once the prawns turn pink, after 1 or 2 minutes of cooking, remove from the heat and season with sea salt flakes.
▶ Once the prawns are cool enough to eat, scatter with parsley and serve with small forks or toothpicks as the perfect sharing starter. Finish off with crusty bread to soak up all that flavour-infused olive oil.
Volunteers offer workers a lifeline
Community volunteers have swung into action delivering food packages and toiletries to the men.
When provisions are distributed, the men line up in long queues for packets of rice, flour, sugar, salt, pulses, milk, biscuits, shaving kits, soap and telecom cards.
Volunteers from St Mary’s Catholic Church said some workers came to the church to pray for their families and ask for assistance.
Boxes packed with essential food items were distributed to workers in the Dubai Investments Park and Ras Al Khaimah camps last week. Workers at the Sonapur camp asked for Dh1,600 towards their gas bill.
“Especially in this year of tolerance we consider ourselves privileged to be able to lend a helping hand to our needy brothers in the Actco camp," Father Lennie Connully, parish priest of St Mary’s.
Workers spoke of their helplessness, seeing children’s marriages cancelled because of lack of money going home. Others told of their misery of being unable to return home when a parent died.
“More than daily food, they are worried about not sending money home for their family,” said Kusum Dutta, a volunteer who works with the Indian consulate.
