DUBAI// A man caught with 1.84 grams of hashish told customs officials it was actually Moroccan dates, a Dubai court heard.

K A, 41-year-old Omani, was apprehended while crossing the border from his home country into the UAE on February 8 of this year.

During searches of him and his Nissan Sunny car, three chunks of hashish were found in his wallet, as well as a number of cigarettes that contained the drug.

“I spoke to him about the nature of the pieces he had and I told him it was hashish but he denied this and insisted that it was dates from Morocco,” said inspector M A, 21.

Prosecutors charged him with possession of drugs.

He confessed at the Dubai Criminal Court on Monday and awaits a verdict on May 12.
