DUBAI // Residents have been warned about the risk of accidents while preparing iftar and suhoor meals after nine fires were recorded in the first days of Ramadan,
Dubai Civil Defence said the fires were all small but its director general, Major General Rashed Thani Al Matrooshi, urged everyone to be wary of oil coming into contact with heat, which can turn the oil into a flammable vapour.
He added that most fires during the holy month happen in kitchens, due to the increased use of oil to fry foods, and increased electrical load and gas leaks resulting from negligence and loose electrical connections.
Maj Gen Al Matrooshi said it was important to conduct periodical maintenance on kitchen equipment.
