SHARJAH // Nine men have been arrested in Sharjah for allegedly stealing 26 lorries and smuggling through the UAE border to nearby countries.
Sharjah Police said the gang of men, from Arab countries, were discovered after a report received at Al Dhaid police station that a lorry owned by a public transport company had been stolen.
“We launched an investigation and found the lorry in the industrial area in Ajman,” said Maj Mohammed Al Teneiji, director of CID at Sharjah’s central region police station.
“Police officers found that many modifications were made on the lorry, including changing the lorry’s plate number.”
Two of the suspects stole the lorry and requested a workshop owner to modify the vehicle, Mr Al Teneiji said. Police then identified two buyers who planned to smuggle the lorry through the border.
Officers found that the two buyers were part of a network that had stolen and smuggled 26 lorries from different emirates, police said. The suspects have been referred to the public prosecution.
