A motorist has been caught driving at 236kph in Ras Al Khaimah.

Police said the "young" driver was travelling at more than 80kph above the speed limit when he was photographed by a speed camera on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Col Ahmad Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrols department, did not reveal when the motorist was caught and how they were reprimanded but said "legal action" had been taken against them.

The punishment for breaking the speed limit by more than 80kph is a Dh3,000 fine, 23 traffic points and impounding the motorist's car for 60 days, according to UAE law.

Col Al Naqbi said almost 350 motorists have been fined for speeding in Ras Al Khaimah since January.

Seven motorists were caught driving faster than 200kph last year with one hitting a top speed of 264kph.

“There are 83 radars installed on the emirate’s roads, and another 10 new radars will be added soon,” Col Al Naqbi said.

He called on drivers to stick to the advertised speed limit and follow all traffic rules and regulations.

In September, a motorist in Umm Al Quwain was caught driving at 225kph.
