SHARJAH // More than 6,000 motorists were caught jumping a red light during the first quarter of this year.

A report issued by the traffic police statistics department said that 6,159 violations were recorded during the first three months of the year.

“Despite the ongoing awareness campaigns, motorists ignore the rules and get into car accidents that leads to death in some cases,” said Major Khalid Mohammed Al Kai.

“Cutting a red light is irresponsible, and the possibility of crashing with other vehicles is almost certain.”

Maj Al Kai added that injuries sustained from crossing a red light is most often severe.

“The main reason behind crossing a red light is due to motorists increasing their speeds to pass the traffic light before it turns red.”

Motorists who run a red light are fined Dh800, have their cars impounded for 15 days and receive 8 black points.

Maj Al Kai stressed the importance of heeding traffic rules to avoid fatal accidents.
