SHARJAH // More than 20 people including women and children were treated for inhaling fumes after a fire broke out in a residential tower.
The fire started in the rubbish room and smoke filtered up the shoot into residential areas of the tower in Al Khan in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
National Ambulances took the affected people to Al Qasimi and Al Kuwait hospitals, where they were treated and released within hours.
Civil Defence received a report about thick smoke coming from the garbage room in the 30-story tower and two firefighting teams were dispatched and were able to contain the situation.
They disconnected the electricity from the building and evacuated the residents.
Most of the residents affected lived in the top storeys, 26 to 30, as they were the last to be evacuated.
All residents were allowed to return home once Civil Defence declared the building safe.
Sharjah Police is investigating the cause of the fire.
