Midday work break inspections in UAE to begin

ABU DHABI// Thousands of inspections are due to be carried out throughout the UAE as part of enforcement for the midday outdoor work ban.

From Wednesday, June 15 until September 15 work done under direct sunlight between 12.30pm and 3pm is banned, reported Wam the state news agency.

To make sure companies comply the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation will conduct an estimated 80,000 inspections across the country.

“Eighteen teams from the ministry will monitor the level of compliance throughout the decided period,” said Maher Al Obed, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspectional Affairs,

“Three teams are formed in Abu Dhabi, two in Al Ain, four teams in Dubai, two in Sharjah, two in Ajman, two teams in Ras Al Khaimah, two in Fujairah and one team in Um Al Quwain.”

Around 20,000 field visits are expected to be carried out.

“The teams are ready to hit 60,000 inspection visits across the nation to make sure all facilities commit to the law,” said Mr Al Obed.

The midday work decree is now in its 12th year and based on international health and safety procedures. Labourers’ working hours will be split between morning and evening shifts for a total of eight hours daily.

If overtime is required they must be compensated. Employers must post clear scheduling information of work hours, midday breaks and provide shelter during rest period for their workers.

Violators will be fined Dh5,000 per worker found working during the announced break hours, to a maximum Dh50,000.
