DUBAI// A man caught with drugs was sentenced to a year in jail and a Dh20,000 fine, despite his claims he had only confiscated the narcotics from an addict friend.

M S, 37, was found guilty at the criminal court of possession of tramadol and hashish.

His friend, N H, 34, was sentenced to 10 years in jail and fined Dh50,000 on charges of intent to supply.

The two Emiratis were arrested in N H’s car in front of his house in Jumeirah on April 25 last year.

During the previous hearing in September, N H had said: “Yes I take drugs and on the day me and my friend were arrested, my friend found the drugs in my car and was about to throw them away in order to help me quit.

“The drugs were mine, they were in the car and my friend got into the car before me. When I climbed in I found him trying to throw the drugs away. We were both arrested, but he has nothing to do with this.”

Police captain A R said both men were known to the anti-narcotics department.

He said he found some drugs in M S’s pocket and a bag of 4,700 tramadol tablets at N H’s house.
