DUBAI // A Briton assaulted and stole money from a 26-year-old man two hours into the New Year, a Dubai court heard.

Prosecutors said the 35-year-old accused, with the help of another unnamed accomplice, approached the Pakistani by a bus stop in Naif just after the New Year was brought in this year and attacked him.

“I was near the bus stop when the second assailant hit my shoulder. When I questioned why he did it, both of them started hitting me,” said the Sharjah resident.

The unnamed assailant stole Dh2,400 from his pocket and both men ran away, the Pakistani said.

“They both ran away before I got up and chased them. I was able to stop the Briton and held him until police arrived and arrested him,” he said.

At Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday, the tourist denied a charge of theft and provided the court a waiver from the Pakistani.

The court will come to a decision on April 9.
