DUBAI // A 36-year-old mechanic is accused of attacking his roommate with a metal bar because he unearthed a tree in front of their room.
The 39-year-old Indian who removed the small tree told prosecutors that on June 16 last year he returned from work after Al Asr prayers and found the tree planted near the room and decided to pull it out.
“At that moment my room-mate arrived and struck me on the palm on my left hand with a metal bar,” said the man, who called police as his hand was badly injured.
Dubai Criminal Court records show he was left with a 2.5 per cent permanent disability after he lost full mobility in one of his fingers due to the injury.
The defendant confessed in court on Wednesday but said he hit his room-mate with his hand, not a metal bar.
He awaits a verdict on October 26.

Strait of Hormuz
Fujairah is a crucial hub for fuel storage and is just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.
The strait is 33 km wide at its narrowest point, but the shipping lane is just three km wide in either direction. Almost a fifth of oil consumed across the world passes through the strait.
