DUBAI // A British man confessed to smuggling 34 marijuana plants but said they were for him alone.

Prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court that police were tipped-off about 39-year-old F H and he was arrested after plants between 36cm and 130cm in length were found at his home.

“When we got to his residence, we identified ourselves as police officers and asked him if he had any drugs. He said yes and showed us some he had hidden inside the microwave,” testified H A, a Dubai Police major.

He added that the defendant also showed officers a number of plastic bottles, jars and a black box that all contained marijuana plants.

“A number of other plants he showed us were inside a drawer equipped with lights to provide the environment needed for the growth of the plants,” said H A.

Police also found a hard drive containing information and directions on how to grow marijuana plants.

“He told us he brought them from India through Dubai International Airport,” added H A.

The Briton is facing charges of smuggling the plants to sell, possessing 270.3 grams of dried marijuana and with consuming marijuana.

The next hearing is on November 26.
