DUBAI // A man admitted threatening his ex-girlfriend’s brother but said he only did so because he was depressed and on medication at the time, a court was told.

Between January 2013 and August last year, Indian N J, 30, demanded Dh22,000 from W K, 37, after sending threatening emails to him, his mother and uncle stating that he had raped W K’s sister and that his mother was an alcoholic.

Prosecutors at Dubai Criminal Court said N J sent the messages on Whatsapp and posted them on Facebook to shame the W K’s family.

W K said that N J demanded Dh22,000 to stop him posting the messages on social media and in emails.

N J told the presiding judge that he was depressed at the time.

“I was in a relationship with the victim’s sister, she broke up with me and I got severely depressed. I was under treatment and I was taking medication when I made those threats.”

N J pleaded guilty to a charge of issuing threats.

The next hearing is set on may 13.
