DUBAI// A man who stabbed his flatmate in the stomach has been sentenced to two years in jail for attempted murder.

The incident happened at 8pm on September 11 last year in the men’s accommodation in Al Qusais while the defendant was chopping onions.

“The discussion turned into an argument and into a fight during which he fell on the knife, but I didn’t stab him nor did I intend to kill him,” said the 22-year-old when he appeared in Dubai Criminal Court last March.

A 37-year-old Indian said the defendant chased the victim, whose details were not in court records, out of the room while holding the knife.

“I was on my bed when I heard the defendant screaming at the victim using foul language and telling him that he won’t leave him alone, then I noticed the man was holding his tummy in pain. I then spotted the blood,” said the witness.

“When I got outside the victim was bleeding and unconscious on the floor while the defendant was restrained by the supervisor who called police.”

The injured man was taken to hospital where he underwent life-saving surgery.

The defendant denied a charge of attempted murder but admitted to consuming alcohol. He will be deported after serving his jail term.
