Man who punched in salesman's front teeth has jail term halved

The accused will now spend three months in jail followed by deportation

A man who punched a salesman, breaking his front teeth, in the toilet of a Chinese restaurant has had his jail sentence reduced.

The Jordanian accused, 31, attacked the Yemeni man, 44, after he had been drinking heavily on the night of November 22 in 2017. He claimed the salesman had assaulted his mother.

The salesman told the court: “He [the accused] walked into the washroom at around 11.30pm and then asked me if we knew each other.

"I told him no but he suddenly punched me in the mouth."

The victim fell to the floor and the man continued to beat him.

Restaurant customers heard screams and ran into the toilet, where they saw the accused hitting the salesman. 
"I saw a waiter running into the washroom after hearing loud noises and I followed him to where we saw the accused beating the victim," said an Egyptian witness who was dining at the restaurant.
A woman said she saw a group of men holding back the accused while another group tended to the bleeding Yemeni man.
Police were called and the Jordanian was arrested. At the Dubai Criminal Court, he was charged for consuming alcohol without a license and physically assaulting the victim. Both of which he denied.
In December last year, the Jordanian was convicted and sentenced to six months in prison, to be followed by deportation. He was also ordered to pay Dh21,000 in temporary compensation to the victim for moral and physical damages.

On Tuesday, Dubai Court of Appeal reduced the man's jail sentence by half but upheld his deportation and compensation fee. The reason for the shortened jail term was not disclosed in court records.
