DUBAI // The boyfriend of a woman who died after taking morphine and codeine he had given to her will spend five years in jail.

The Emirati, 33, denied charges of facilitating and consuming drugs but confessed to possessing drugs for personal use. He was found guilty of all charges by Dubai Criminal Court.

On August 12 last year, police were alerted after the woman’s body was left outside the entrance of a hospital in Al Mankhoul.

“A forensic expert told us she was dead and there were injection marks on her left arm,” said a police officer.

Security camera footage showed a white vehicle dropping off the 25-year-old victim before driving away.

“The defendant was arrested near his home in Al Quoz and during questioning he told us the woman’s identity,” the officer said.

“He said they had been together for two days and at night they would sleep in the car because he had no money for a hotel room.”

The policeman added that the defendant said he grew worried after his girlfriend, who he said had her own prescription for drugs, fainted so he dropped her at the hospital.

He was also fined Dh20,000.
