DUBAI // A cook’s attempt to fool customs inspectors by mixing his marijuana with fish failed when he was arrested on arrival at Dubai airport.

Bangladeshi MA, 25, was arrested on May 4 and had nearly half a kilogram of marijuana in his possession, mixed in with dried fish, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Prosecutors charged him with smuggling and possessing 468.6 grammes of the drug but he was not present in court to enter a plea.

Emirati customs inspector JA said himself and a colleague spotted the passenger in an arrivals hall at Dubai International Airport.

“We saw a plastic bag wrapped in duct tape so we suspected him,” said the inspector, who opened the bag and found the fish before spotting the marijuana mixed in.

When questioned by the inspector the cook said he was asked to carry the drug by a friend. However, during prosecution interrogations he said he brought it for his own use.

The next hearing will be on August 9.
