DUBAI// A man who forged a marriage certificate to get a visa for his wife will spend three months in prison.

The 40-year-old was arrested on July 12 last year when he visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dubai to resume procedures for his wife's visa.

The Sri Lankan, who is an employee of a private company, said he paid a man in his home country to have the certificate notarized before delivering it to him in person in Dubai.

“I had contacted a friend back home and asked him to pick up the certificate from my mother and have it authenticated by authorities, I even wired him Dh1,200 for that purpose plus a commission in return for his efforts,” he told the court.

He said he was only made aware that the certificate had been altered after being informed by a ministry employee.

Prosecutors said the certificate had a forged stamp and poster attributed to UAE Embassy in Colombo.

In court he denied a charge of forgery and using forged documents but was sentenced to three months in prison followed by deportation.
