DUBAI // A man broke the fingers of a colleague who had given up his passport to bail him out, a court has heard.

Prosecutors at Dubai Criminal Court said Pakistani A A, who remains at large, was involved in a criminal case in Sharjah and his compatriot A Y, 50, bailed him out, leaving his passport with Sharjah Police as a guarantee.

“After he got out, he was nowhere to be found,” said the co-worker said. “I looked for him as the passport remained seized. I kept looking for him and I found him in Al Hamriyah by coincidence.”

He said his colleague was with another man, aged 47. He called his manager to tell him he had found the missing man, and his boss told him to keep the defendant there while he called police.

The co-worker said the two men then assaulted him and fled, and he was taken to hospital for treatment to his broken fingers. He was left with a 4 per cent permanent disability, losing full mobility in one finger.

His colleague’s companion was arrested and referred to court, where he denied a charge of physical assault and causing permanent disability.

A verdict is expected on February 21.
