Man cleared of assaulting roommate with screwdriver

The alleged victim told the court that his roommate hit him in the face then stole money from under his pillow

A man accused of assaulting his sleeping roommate with a screw driver was cleared of all charges on Thursday by Dubai Criminal Court.

The Egyptian roommate told the court that on April 1, the 18-year-old accused hit him in the face with a screwdriver then stole Dh1,500 from under his pillow in their flat in Al Muraqqabat.

He said he saw the Algerian defendant running out of his room.

"Shortly after, I checked under my pillow where I hid Dh1500 before I slept but I didn't find it," he said.
The roommate said they argued days before because the defendant had allegedly made a lot of noise while the Egyptian man was sleeping.
Police arrested the man as he tried to board a flight from Dubai International Airport and referred him to court. He was cleared of charges of assault and theft on Thursday.
