ABU DHABI // A man caught driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol after a car crash argued that he only had two beers and therefore could not have been influenced by alcohol, the Criminal Court heard on Monday.
MN, from Egypt, said he was the one who reported the crash and gave first-aid to the injured: “I was completely aware and not under any influence. And I have never consumed hashish in my life - I have been working in an Islamic bank for a long time and don’t do these things. But I was in Egypt before the incident,” he said.
The court then asked him if he would confess to consuming alcohol, and he said it was the first time he had drank alcohol in his life and he only had two beers: “not to the extent of getting drunk.”
His defence attorney, Mohammed Al Azazi, said his client arrived in the UAE on the same day as the accident, and therefore it was possible that he consumed the drug abroad.
He requested that the court investigates details of when the defendant could have consumed hashish.
“The report in the case files does not mention if the consumption was conducted inside or outside the country, and if his sample was positive or negative.”
Mr Al Azazi also requested bail for MN.
